The Shock-Absorber market was probably the first area of the automotive field to take significant advantage of powder metallurgy having seen the possibility of obtaining extremely complex frontal profiles at much reduced costs.
Pistons, guides and valves are the parts produced with this technology. The necessity to obtain items with good superficial hardness imposes the use of carbon copper steels which also provide a high stress resistance.
The normal process used to produce these parts utilises compression, sintering and sizing.
Parts which are subject to wear are steam treated.
