Powder mixing

Powder mixing

The individual components of each alloy are throroughly mixed in order to obtain a truly homogenous mix, including the lubricating elements which are required to reduce friction with the tool surface.

This allows a better flow of powder into the tool; ensures correct filling of the tool with even density; and reduces the risk of stress cracking during extraction of the component from the tool in its "green" (pressed but not sintered) state.

This basic but crucial phase of the process is vital to ensure the correct performance of all subsequent operations For example, if the powder remains static in the mixer for too long a period, it could cause some iron grains to be coated with excessive lubricant which in turn reduces the bond and strength of the green parts. In addition, the change in structure could affect the filling of the tool.

Sinteris has three powder mixing machines with capacities of 100 kg, 200 kg and 500 kg, although there has been a significant move towards standardisation of raw materials with the aim of being able to obtain pre-mixed powders certified by the suppliers.
